Assignment 1:
Before the Europeans started exploring and colonizing North America, there were other people living on the continent. On page 13 of your Interactive Notebook, explain how these people came to live in North America. Then list and briefly describe the regions of North America where these people settled. Get a copy of the American indian Cultural regions map from Ms. Valentine. Label and color each of the regions and the key. Glue the map onto page 14 of your Interactive NoteBook.

Get a copy of the regions map of the British colonies in North America from Ms. Valentine. Cut out the map of the New England Colonies and glue it to the top right corner of page 15 in your Interactive Notebook. Cut out the map of the Middle Colonies and glue it to the top left corner of page 16 in your Interactive Notebook. Cut out the map of the Southern Colonies and glue it to the top right corner of page 17 in your Interactive Notebook. On each map label the colonies, the major bodies of water near the colonies, and the large urban areas. In the space left on each page, describe the land, the climate, the economy, and the diversity of people of each region using the reading below.
Extra credit: answer the following questions for each region: How did the physical geography of the region affect economic activities in that region? What was characteristic of population patterns in the American colonies? What was characteristic of the human-environmental interactions in the American colonies?
